Climate-resilient production systems in Africa focus on adapting agriculture to the challenges of climate change while ensuring sustainability. This session will demonstrate and discuss the collective scientific evidence on performance of agroecology approaches as climate-resilient agricultural strategies for smallholder African farming systems. Agroecological approaches for crop and livestock production encompass using locally available crops, trees and shrubs, also within integrated agri-livestock systems, relying on locally available resources, as well as promoting crop diversity in space and time, as fertility and health promoting agents. Agroecological management optimizes the capability of farmers to cope with erratic weather events and strengthens rural communities' adaptive capacity, fostering a more sustainable, climate-resilient agricultural future across Africa.
