Soils4Africa

The aim of Soils4Africa is to provide an open-access Soil Information System (SIS) with a set of key indicators and underpinning data, accompanied with a methodology for repeated soil monitoring across the African continent. The soil information system will become part of the knowledge and information system of FNSSA and will be hosted by an African institute. Key deliverables include:

  • Soil Information System (SIS): A comprehensive, open-access platform hosting soil data and indicators, integrated with open Earth Observation data.

  • Map of agricultural land for continental Africa.

  • Soil Sampling and Analysis: Collection of large quantify of soil samples (currently 20.000) from agricultural lands across Africa, analysed at a central reference laboratory to ensure data consistency.

  • Guidelines, Tools and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Detailed guidelines, protocols for field activities and laboratory analyses, and survey data management tools ensuring uniformity in data collection and processing.

  • Stakeholder Engagement and Capacity building: Collaboration with local and regional stakeholders to define use cases and indicators, ensuring the SIS meets diverse user needs.

All in all, the outcomes from Soils4Africa project will support agribusinesses, scientists, and policymakers in promoting sustainable land management and agricultural productivity across Africa.

Funding acknowledgement: Soils4Africa is supported by the H2020 European Funding for Research and Innovation under grant agreement No 862900
